Terranova Technologies has got a deal for the construction of a gold mine facility in Russia. This contract also included some electric self-propelled stackers. The main problem encountered by TNT was the particularly severe weather conditions in winter in the mine area where the temperature drops to -56 C°. For this reason TNT asked Borghi Assali for stackers that could withstand and work at such prohibitive temperatures.

Innovation 1
In order to ensure the required performance even at polar temperatures, our design office had to:
• Design oversized structures to ensure load capacity at any temperature
• Use special materials for frame, fifth wheel and sprockets
• Use special gearboxes with oil and gaskets that can withstand temperatures down to – 60 C°
• Use special electric motors and electromagnetic brake heaterss

Innovation 3
Another peculiarity of the units supplied to TNT for their stackers is the very low maximum speed required: 0.37 km/h. In order to comply with this request with electric motors it was necessary to use double traction gearboxes to reach a very high final reduction ratio and special electric motors capable of delivering the maximum torque necessary even at very low speeds, which is impossible with standard electric motors.

Innovation 2
For this project, Borghi Assali has created two-wheeled electric motor wheels of 30 and 36 tons, and 65 tons 4-wheel electric boogies. All two-wheel drive wheels are equipped with steering motors with fifth wheel and sprockets while the boogies, which are raised when necessary, steer by means of a fifth wheel with connection to a hydraulic cylinder.

Innovation 4
In order to guarantee the maximum protection of the electric motor and the gearbox, a special protection grid has been designed to prevent mud, stones and debris from entering the cradle housing electric motors and gearboxes.
